<lj:music>listening to Frank Sinatra. He's dead.</lj:music>

So I watched The Manchurian Candidate right now, not the remake, the original with Frank Sinatra.

He just got reassigned from the press corps for being a crazy or something, and he's on a train. He's in the dining car, lighting a cigarette -- he notices he's sitting next to this girl, asks her if he can smoke, lights his cigarette, FLIPS OUT AND KNOCKS OVER THE TABLE, and runs off into the area between cars or something.

The girl follows him, ostensibly to return his lit-but-unsmoked cigarette, and they have some crazy conversation that loops around in crazy loops, in which she gives him her phone number. Note that in this scene Frank Sinatra does not look as dashing as one would expect; he looks gross and sick and like a crazy man who has just flipped out and knocked over a table in a train car.

The next time he talks to this girl, he's calling her from jail after he beat up his friend's butler.

You'd think it would be enough that this girl he met on a train would give him a ride home from jail. But nooo! Frank Sinatra changed her life so much that after she got off the train, she broke up with her fiancé! And had no second thoughts when the very next contact she has with the man for whom she dumped her fiancé (am I being old-fashioned or should this be a very difficult decision to make) is when the cops call her to tell her to post his bail?

I was already pretty much impressed, at this point, by the sheer amount of game Frank Sinatra must have emitted without even trying. But the very next scene this girl is in, they are living together and she's cooking him dinner!

Maybe it's not because I'm old-fashioned that I think this progression of events is rather odd, but because I'm too modern to understand the sheer -impression- that Sinatra is capable of making

Another awesome line in this movie, which was unfortunately not delivered by Sinatra: "GET IN THE KITCHEN AND MAKE LIKE A HOUSEWIFE."

The other night, I hauled my corset out from hiding and tried it on, because an Edwardian costume is NO FUN if you can't have a 23" waist along with it.

I could only get down to 24" and the busk is all bent up, but that is not why I need to make another corset.

I need to make another corset because MY CAT HAS APPARENTLY CLAIMED THIS ONE AS HER OWN.

The reason I put it away in hiding is because one day, it fell under my bed and by the time I found it the cat had been sleeping on it for weeks (she has expensive tastes) and it was covered in fur. I finally got around to cleaning it the other day, and so I tried it on for a bit and then tossed it on the couch and started to get ready for class.

I was about to leave, when I realized that if I left the corset just sitting out, Obentochan would sleep on it again. I went to put it away, but IT WAS TOO LATE, she was already lounging on it. So I tried to take it away, and she BIT THE FUCK OUT OF MY HAND. Not in a playful way, in an ATTACK way. I distracted her with the laser pointer and escaped.

She wasn't laying on it when I got home from school (she was in the Schiaparelli shoebox -- see what I mean about expensive tastes?), but when I sat down on the couch and started taking out the laces, she lunged at me like only a jumped-up Bridgeport alley cat can, and bit the fuck out of my hand -again-. I dropped the corset, and she curled up on my knee and started purring. o_o

I'd let her just have it, but I'm not sure I want some kind of fetish-cat running around my house :/

Seriously, do you guys -know- how much better my life would currently be if I'd chosen a halfways decent senior project? The other day, I was just thinking that I should have done WWII re-enactment... there's hardly a source out there for women's uniforms, it would be HOLY SHIT OMG FUN, it would help me out when applying for costume-related jobs or grad school or whatever, and most importantly I wouldn't currently want to shoot myself in the face!

Fabric would be a bit tricky to find, but at least I wouldn't hate my senior project.

Instead, I decided I wanted to do sweet fuck-all for market research, and chose gothic lolita... ;_; I wish I could go back in time. I mean, I wish this every day, but right now I wish I could go back mere months instead of years, decades or centuries.

Also, I cannot remember what I needed at the fabric store other than piping for my Typhoid Mary skirt, (possibly)netting and bleached muslin for the blouse, senior project fabric, black netting for the totally hilarious 1980s romantigoth getup I'm wearing to Nocturna, stuff to stick on a hat, and a stop along the way at the salvation army to see if I can find a tie for Ben's costume and a halfways decent blouse for me, and perhaps also a fall coat and/or some work clothes. This sounds like a lot already, but last night I was laying in bed contemplating various contraptions I could use to carry enormous amounts of cargo on my bike, so deep in my heart I'm pretty sure there was more. Well, there's also the stuffed typhoid toy from the surgery museum...

... I keep going into trance-like states where all I can think about are pleats. This can't be good.

Edit: ATTN SEWINGDORKS. At burdastyle.com you can print out patterns in pieces on regular paper and tape them all together at full size for free! This combination of open-source and sewing is giving me HOPE FOR THE FUTURE, maybe I should write up the huge thing about fashion and copyright and doujinshi and tv and videogames as modern folklore one of these days.

I am particularly fond of this jumper, this coat. I also like how the site has information about fabrics, walkthroughs for sewing techniques, etc, rather than a hellhole like Craftster where the prevailing opinion seems to be that you can do whatever you want and expecting some sort of technique to it is OMG SNOBBERY.

I need advice...

If I can't find the Typhoid bacteria plushie at the surgery museum gift shop, I don't think I'll be Typhoid Mary, because I don't want to put on a corset for a costume anything less than awesome.

I could, however, be THE RED BARON...
Beatnix has a hat that looks like a WWI flying helmet, Ragstock has a pretty nifty pleather jacket, and all I'd need to make would be crazy riding breeches. Or, I could wear a miniskirt and a tight blouse and be the SEXY red baron lol. Altogether, this outfit would probably cost around $40 though, whereas the Typhoid Mary stuff would cost between $10 and $30, but take more sewing. I could, however, make it more HISTORICALLY ACCURATE

I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO, INTERNET :(

So yesterday, Sara and I were heading towards the bus stop on our way to school, when we heard a crazy sound kind of like a duck. So we started looking for the duck, and discovered that the sound was coming from a tree. That was totally weird, so we looked up...

It wasn't a duck, it was a dying squirrel. v_V Now I can't get that sound out of my head.

I have to go to the fabric store ASAP but I'm so tired... I guess I'll pick up my check and sleep for awhile after class.

The rest of this quarter is going to suck, but Surface Design seems pretty cool.
